Program Information

The research focus of BIMoS is on the development of methodologies based on mathematical models to solve problems of diverse application areas such as engineering. A particular emphasis will be on the following range of topics:

  • Continuous and Discrete Optimization
  • Data Science
  • Inverse Problems
  • Model Design
  • Robust and Stable Numerical Simulations

Research will be carried out in a highly interdisciplinary way by ensuring close collaboration of experts on the theoretical and application side.

BIMoS offers six PhD fellowships for outstanding students holding a master’s degree. The fellowships are provided by the following faculties of the Technische Universität Berlin:

  • Faculty II    "Mathematics and Natural Sciences"
  • Faculty III   "Process Sciences"
  • Faculty IV   "Electrical Engineering and Computer Science"
  • Faculty V    "Mechanical Engineering and Transport Systems"
  • Faculty VI   "Planning, Building and Environment"

Each PhD student will be supervised by a professor from TU Berlin, who is working in the general focus area of BIMoS. To ensure high quality of the supervision process, a supervision agreement will be signed by both parties. In addition, each PhD student can choose a mentor, who provides individual guidance not only concerning academic development, but also for general career advise. Due to the interdisciplinary character of BIMoS and to broaden the scientific horizon even further, this mentor will come from a different research area.

Each student is then registered as a regular student at TU Berlin. The supervisor and a mentor will jointly advise the student during their PhD.

Students are expected to attend the BIMoS Days, the BIMoS Distinguished Lectures and the BIMoS PhD Seminar.

More information on our PhD Fellows and their research projects can be found here.
