BIMoS Days

Each BIMoS Day is devoted to introducing a broad scientific audience to a novel methodology with a wide range of applications.

The BIMoS Members may download the presentation slides and recordings from the BIMoS Days here.

BIMoS events have been pausing since March 2020 due the Covid 19 pandemic and other major organizational developments. They will continue in a virtual format starting in February 2021.

Program

Pattern formation in materials can often be explained in the framework of the calculus of variations as the result of a competition between different energy contributions. Typical examples include microstructures in shape-memory alloys and the formation of quantum dots.

In this talk, modern techniques and recent results of the mathematical analysis of such variational problems will be discussed, which often have non-local or non-convex contributions.

 

BIMoS Day "Modern Methods in Combustion Science: high-fidelity numerical simulations combined with first principles and data-driven models"

Despite the progress of renewable energy sources,more than 85% of the worldwide energy is produced by combustion. Medium-range forecasts confirm that combustion of fossil and renewable fuels will remain the major energy supplier. Hence, the design of clean and sustainable energy systems is crucial to handle climate change.

The technological bottlenecks for the design of low-emission combustion chambers are of multi-scale and multi-physics nature. This talk will focus on current research carried out by the DMF group at TU Berlin. We investigate the unsteady nature of combustor flows with Large Eddy Simulations and combine the flow field data with acoustic low-order models. More recently, we generate data-driven models using Machine Learning architectures to improve our understanding of the flow phenomena.

 

BIMoS Day "Feedback control of large-scale dynamical systems"

Optimal control of large-scale systems, e.g., arising from (spatial) semi-discretizations of partial differential equations describing real-world phenomena, constitutes a challenging task. This is all the more the case if so-called feedback controls, often requiring the solution of nonlinear operator equations, are of interest.

This talk provides an introduction into a class of (sub-)optimal linear and nonlinear feedback methodologies based on, e.g., Riccati and Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations. With regard to an efficient computation of these strategies, approximation techniques based on low rank and model reduction approaches are discussed. Numerical results for some classical control systems arising in fluid dynamics, cardiac electrophysiology and statistical mechanics will be presented
