Report and Photos of the BIMoS Opening Ceremony

Wednesday, 19. November 2014

The BIMoS Opening Ceremony took place on Wednesday, November 19th, 2014 in the Lichthof of the Technische Universität Berlin, organized by Dr. Baumgarten from the TU-Dialogplattform. Prof. Sesterhenn, who is one of the scientific directors of BIMoS and guided through the program, could welcome more than 60 participants from all seven faculties. The program started with a welcome speech by Prof. Ittel who is the vice president for international relations and teacher education of the TU Berlin. In her speech, she highlighted the key role which this graduate school will take in the future; in particular, to increase the internationality of graduate programs and to bring the seven faculties closer together. She also wished the BIMoS-Team all the best for a great start of their program and is looking forward to welcome the first international PhD students. The next speaker was the other scientific director of BIMoS, Prof. Kutyniok, who discussed the aims and contents of BIMoS. She emphasized that the role of the area of model- and simulation-based research and of highly interdisciplinary approaches to tackle the challenges posted by the 21th century. The TU Berlin as one of the largest technical universities in Germany has already a strong emphasis on mathematical modeling, simulation, and optimization; with this graduate school being a very natural and necessary continuation. She further discussed the contributions of the president and the seven faculties and highlighted as two aims

  1. the interactions between graduate students of TU Berlin of all seven faculties in this research area within a highly interdisciplinary and international environment, and
  2. the development of a platform for interactions even on a senior level to initiate new collaborations and use synergy energies.

The research focus in its full generality will be on the development of methodologies based on mathematical models to solve problems of diverse application areas as well as high interdisciplinarity. She also presented the organization of BIMoS, the program itself, and the planned activities such as a Distinguished Lecture Series. She finished her talk by showing a timeline for the start of BIMoS. This talk was followed by a talk by Prof. Mehrmann, who is the chair of DFG Research Center MATHEON and of the Einstein Center for Mathematics Berlin (ECMath). He showed the scientific environment of BIMoS, and started his talk by showing the Berlin scientific landscape. He then emphasized that MATHEON was organized around application areas rather than mathematical methodologies, and showed several illustrative examples of research, most of which would also be possible projects within BIMoS. One further highlight of the opening ceremony was the keynote talk by Prof. Gugercin from Virginia Tech, USA, who spoke about the topic of "Model Reduction for Modeling and Simulation of Large-scale Dynamical Systems". In his talk, he discussed several exemplary problems such as modeling and simulating the heat in an air-conditioned class room, which also all fit within the research area of BIMoS. Throughout the ceremony, the Tesorino Duo played several pieces of music for piano and saxophone, delighting the audience. After the event, the TU-Dialogplattform served fingerfood and drinks, and most people from the audience stayed a long time for intense discussions. During the whole event, also several posters of research projects were presented showing exemplary research within BIMoS.

Following this link, you will find the photos of the BIMoS opening ceremony!
