Research Focus:
The basis for research and teaching at my chair emphasizes on the holistic view on the system ‘Gas Turbine’ for flying and ground based applications. Accounting for the characteristics of turbo modules and all subsystems, the efficiency and the operating regime of this type of complex engines can be assessed. In consequence, experimental and analytical work is performed in the area of flows through turbomachinery with specific focus on unsteady flow phenomena and operability. Furthermore, aspects of the interaction of blade vibrations and the aerodynamics are looked at, covering topics in the area of aeroelasticity and flutter of blades in compressors and turbines. To assess the effects of the detailed processes in the modules of a gas turbine, whole engine performance is simulated, taking into account the secondary air system within the engine as well.
Basically three strategic areas of activities have been defined
- Steady and unsteady flows in compressors and turbines
- Whole engine aspects of gas turbines including secondary systems, operation and controls
- Interaction of turbomachinery aerodynamics with acoustics and structure
